Avoid The Plague Avoid The Plague

…like the plague, as it were.

A roundup of resources pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, which rages on even though we don’t talk about it anymore.

Why minimize your exposure?

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still circulating wildly in every country in the world, and causes insidious and cumulative damage to the brain, heart, immune system, and various other systems in the body. Every bout is a roll of the dice against one-in-ten odds of Long Covid, which is a long term (if not permanent) disabling condition. Every bout of COVID dramatically increases the risks of heart failure, stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, among other things. Odds of the acute phase being severe enough to lead to hospitalization or death increase with every infection. COVID-19 is no mere cold.

How to minimize your exposure?

Masks work, and good masks work better. Outdoors is safer than indoors, but crowding and proximity can result in high risk even outdoors. HEPA filters and ventilation reduce risk, though not as well as universal N95 masking. Upper-room UVGI and far-UVC disinfectant lamps can reduce it further. Vaccination helps, though its effectiveness against infection, transmission, and cumulative harm is much lower than against severe acute-phase illness and death.
